Breast lift surgery is becoming increasingly popular, as women (and men) seek to address what can be an issue that may be greatly impacting on their self-esteem. Also known as mastopexy, the surgery aims to ‘lift’ or reshape sagging breasts, a condition referred to as (breast ptosis).
The procedure doesn’t just lift the breasts, it repositions the nipples too. Breasts can sag for a number of reasons, and the condition can have a huge impact on self-confidence. It can be down to the effects of pregnancy or breastfeeding, extreme weight loss or simply a result of the ageing process. In the latter case, this is because of the skin losing its elasticity as we age, resulting in the breasts beginning to sag. For someone who was happy with their breasts previously, and experiences this change in their body, it can be quite an issue.
During a consultation, the patient and surgeon will discuss the patient’s concerns. The level of ptosis is established by where the nipple is in relation to the breast fold, or the underside of the breast. There can of course be degrees of severity here and an accomplished surgeon will be able to establish the best course of action. The level of droop in the breast, the nipple position and the amount of skin laxity or looseness will all impact on the type of breast surgery procedure that’s carried out. As you might imagine, the less droop or sagging there is, the more straightforward the procedure.
The shape and (re)positioning of the breasts and nipples are very important. Aesthetic harmony should always be the aim for both patient and cosmetic surgeon, and so the breasts need to be in proportion and well placed from an aesthetic perspective.
With this in mind, imaging software can be hugely helpful at the consultation stage. It allows the patient and surgeon to assess and decide on the best shape to aim for. I use Crisalix 3D imaging technology in my practice and being able to either capture or upload a 3D image of a patient, before manipulating it on a screen during the consultation, is invaluable. There is also a VR headset the patient can wear and virtually ‘see’ the augmented breasts on their body. It can be very reassuring for them to know what the outcome will be in real terms.
Prior to surgery, I make markings on the breast while the patient is standing up (lying down, the breasts and nipples are in very different positions). This means I can pinpoint the desired location for the repositioned nipple before any work is done. Again, I will confirm the nipple position with the patient to ensure both the patient and myself are in agreement with the expected final outcome. The surgery itself usually takes about two hours and is performed under general anaesthetic.
It is often a day procedure, but a simple breast lift can be combined with other procedures if needed. For example, if there has been a loss of volume in the breasts, due to breast feeding or weight loss, a breast lift can be combined with a breast augmentation.
Inserting implants at the time of the breast lift makes for a more complicated procedure, and needs a skilled surgeon to carry it out successfully. For the patient this means fuller, higher- positioned breasts, restoring and enhancing a natural look or body shape, or addressing something that may have been an upsetting issue for some time.
