If you have made the decision to undergo aesthetic surgery or a cosmetic procedure, there are a number of things you should keep in mind to help ensure the best results for you. Deciding to address a particular concern and settling on the most suitable procedure to undergo are only the beginning of the journey. By being well informed and fully aware of what you should (and shouldn’t do), you can help maximise the benefits and results of any treatment. Here, I have outlined just some of the key points you should keep in mind.
This is perhaps the most important thing to get right, whether you are having dermal filler injections or a more serious surgical procedure such as a tummy tuck or face lift, you need to select the right surgeon for you. You are putting yourself in someone else’s hands and it just makes sense to ensure they are sufficiently experienced and trustworthy.
On a basic level, your surgeon should be properly accredited to perform the treatment. They should hold FRCSI(Plast) or FRCS(Plast) qualifications and be an accredited consultant plastic surgeon. There is a list of qualified surgeons on the Irish Association of Plastic Surgeons website, plasticsurgery.ie.
It is also important that you like and trust whomever is performing the procedure. A good relationship with your surgeon will help to put you at ease and you will know that all their advice and recommendations are given with your best interests in mind
The consultation stage is an essential step before any sort of procedure. It helps to outline the patient’s aims and aspirations for the treatment, enables the surgeon to establish what is possible, and also gives the patient the opportunity to ask any questions they have – an important step to take before making any decision.
In short, it ensures everyone is on the same page, which is very important for good results. The consultation is also when the surgeon will explain what will be involved in the procedure and here it is vital that the patient is open and honest about their lifestyle.
Many procedures carry risks – some are major surgeries, after all – and the patient needs to be forthcoming about things such as smoking, any existing health concerns and any aspects of their lifestyle that may hinder or affect the surgery. The more clarity at this stage, the better for final results.
Your surgeon will have your best interests at heart and they know what they are talking about too. If you are given any pre-surgery recommendations, make sure to take them seriously. For example, someone who is very overweight or in the process of weight loss may be advised to go away and lose a little more weight (to ensure results after any surgery can be maximised).
Another big issue is smoking. Smoking can hinder the recovery process of surgeries so if you are advised to quit or cut back, take it on board. (As with point 2, if you smoke, make sure your surgeon knows this at the consultation stage!)
Procedures are not magic, and if you think you will look ‘perfect’ after that nose job or breast augmentation, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. You may indeed look perfect for you – a better, enhanced version of yourself - but you need to accept the limits of any and all procedures.
You should not seek to look like any celebrity, just the best version of you, and whatever procedure you choose must work in harmony with the rest of your features. Your surgeon will emphasise this at the consultation stage (and with imaging software such as that used at my clinic you can see a virtual version of what results to expect with certain procedures).
Again, any advice from your surgeon or their staff is given for a reason. If you are advised to take it easy for some days/weeks after a cosmetic surgery treatment, make sure to do so. Many surgeries require some aftercare or the avoidance of exertion, etc, during the healing process.
Ignoring any aftercare steps may negatively impact on the effects of your surgery.
