When people get to around the age of 30 or 40, their jowls tend to start to drop and sag a little, but most are not really ready for surgery to treat it. For these people, I would recommend an innovative technique called the thread lift that will treat the issue very effectively.
Thread lifts are becoming very common now and while the treatment is not for everyone, it is significantly cheaper and less invasive than a facelift, or rhytidectomy. A thread lift costs a lot less than the average price for a facelift procedure.
A thread lift is a temporary measure, lasting about 12 to 18 months, and that tends to suit my patients. Not too many people walk into my clinic looking for invasive cosmetic surgery such as a neck lift, facelift or browlift; they tend to want to try something that is not so invasive, and where non-surgical facial rejuvenation techniques such as Botox and fillers can work very well with most patients as a proactive way to stay looking young, some want that little bit more done to maintain their youthful appearance.
The treatment involves the insertion of special threads into the face, which are then pulled up at certain points to restore definition. I use a product called Silhouette Soft, which is made from a dissolvable polylactic acid. As well as the lifting effect provided by the threads, the polylactic acid acts in the subcutaneous tissue and helps to stimulate collagen production, which in turn helps to add shape to the face.
Another great benefit of a thread lift is that the patient can have this treatment done under local anaesthetic, which means they can come in and sit with me in my clinic, and I can do it right there for them.
I numb three points on the face, and using a very small needle, insert the thread and pull it up to tighten the face at these three points, giving a much more defined and youthful looking appearance. The threads are held in situ by absorbable cones, placed in different directions, and I can manually reshape the tissue a little to give more aesthetically pleasing results.
After the treatment, there may be a little bruising or swelling and a slight irregularity may occur where the threads were inserted, but this usually disappears after a few days.
A little bit of aftercare is necessary, such as sleeping elevated on pillows for a few nights, avoiding over-exposure to sunlight, not using saunas for a few weeks, etc, but this is all explained to the patient at the consultation, as I would do with patients considering any sort of cosmetic procedure.
The threads are quite difficult to take out, but this can be done if the patient wishes. However, I would recommend the patient just wait for the threads to dissolve over the course of 12 to 18 months.
As it is a temporary treatment, it can be done several times on a patient if they want to repeat the procedure. A thread lift also works very well in combination with other treatments such as Botox and fillers.
As I mentioned, it is not for everyone. If the patient has too heavy a jowl for example, I would not recommend it, but in general it can be a great option for those not ready to consider a full cosmetic surgery procedure.
