Also called abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck is a procedure to remove excess fat, tighten muscles and smooth the contours of the abdomen.
The abdomen (also known as the tummy or belly) is one of the most common areas of aesthetic concern for people. A person may be uncomfortable with an excess of fat or skin here, as a result of obesity, weight loss, pregnancy or a combination of these factors. People undergo the procedure to achieve a smoother silhouette and have a flatter stomach.
Each patient I see is different; some may have an excess of skin or perhaps fatty tissue, or they may have weak abdominal muscles. Sometime it can be a combination of all three. A surgeon needs to have a strong awareness of, and appreciation for, the natural contour of the abdomen. They will then use their cosmetic surgery skills to achieve the best results for the patient.
Liposuction can also be performed or can even be used as an alternative in some cases, when excess fat is the issue, rather than excess or loose skin.
A good patient/doctor relationship is a very important aspect of this sort of surgery. Prior to surgery, the surgeon should explain the medical terms for the procedure, and discuss the patient’s expectations and the factors that need to be considered when undergoing cosmetic surgery, while also fully assessing the patient’s fitness for the procedure.
Before surgery, the patient should undergo a general health check and a clinical examination to ensure there are no underlying issues such as bulges in the abdomen, which may be hernias.
Pre-existing surgical scars can impact on the surgery and may even prevent someone from undergoing a tummy tuck. The procedure is usually performed under a general anesthetic and takes between two and five hours to complete.
An incision is made across the abdomen from hip to hip, excess skin and fat are removed and muscles are reinforced. The incisions are closed layer by layer using specialised plastic surgery techniques to minimise complications.
After surgery, the patient will have surgical drains inserted to remove fluid and will wear compression supports. They will also take anticoagulants to thin the blood and reduce the chance of clotting in the legs and lungs, which could otherwise prove dangerous.
As with any cosmetic surgery procedure, it is important for patients to understand that there are potential complications with this procedure - delayed wound healing, bleeding, infection, bruising, contour irregularity and potential loss of the belly button.
