Also known as forehead rejuvenation or a forehead lift, it is a procedure to reposition a low brow or reduce lines in the forehead area. Brow lifts are fast becoming one of the most popular procedures here in Ireland. This may be because they can be very effective, require little downtime and there is minimal scarring too.
The aim of a brow lift is to create a more youthful looking appearance. It can be a very effective way of rejuvenating the face and giving an overall ‘refresh’ to a person’s appearance. As we age, our old friend gravity causes the features to sag somewhat. This can not only cause an aged appearance but a drooping brow can mean a person looks like they are presenting emotions such as sadness or anger, even when they are not.
The surgery involves tightening or partially removing the facial muscles that are involved in the drop in the brow. Excess skin can be removed, and fat and muscle repositioned if necessary.
There is a sort of tug-of-war going on between the forehead muscle (frontalis muscle) at the forehead and the eye muscle (orbicularis oculi). There are two opposing forces at play so a surgeon needs to have a deep understanding of this dynamic in order to achieve good results with this sort of surgery.
A surgeon also needs a good artistic eye, as one of the critical points in a brow lift surgery is to know before the operation just where the hairline is going to end up and whether it will be compatible with the patient’s facial features. Similarly, brows do not have to be symmetrical (there is a saying that brows ‘should be sisters, not twins’) but should work aesthetically.
Brow lift surgery can be performed in a number of ways. An open brow lift can involve one incision at the level of the ears and across the hairline, or the surgery can be done endoscopically. The latter is the more popular procedure; it’s a minimally invasive option where 3 to 5 small incisions are made discreetly in the hairline. In recent years, another method for brow lift has emerged: The Silhouette Soft thread lift is a minimally invasive technique which I will talk about in my future blogs.
For some patients, a brow lift would be better performed together with the facelift surgery, for the most natural-looking results. A brow lift can also be teamed with upper eyelid blepharoplasty if the patient has droopy eyelids. All of these different components should be taken into account and anatomical components critically assessed by the surgeon at the consultation stage.
The procedure is usually performed under general anesthetic and takes about two hours. The patient may have some bruising or swelling in the area after the procedure and in general would need to take 8 to 10 days off work for a full recovery.
Results can be very effective and have a high patient satisfaction rate. When healed, the patient should have a fresher appearance and a smoother, more defined forehead.
