I was delighted to be featured in the latest issue of Irish Tatler, discussing the use of Botox and fillers as an effective way to combat the signs of aging and to maintain a youthful appearance.

In the article, I discussed how both plastic surgeons and dermatologists are very well equipped to administer Botox and fillers, with many experienced and highly-skilled dermatologists available to administer the treatment. Plastic surgeons are also experts in providing both surgical and non- surgical facial rejuvenation, because of the fact that they perform complicated surgical procedures such as blepharoplasty, or peri-orbital (eyelid) surgery, a rhytidectomy such as facelifts and neck lifts, and other facial procedures that result in a comprehensive knowledge of facial anatomy, the face’s various aesthetic units and the complicated system of nerves underneath the skin.

I was also keen to dispel some of the myths around Botox that saw it fall out of favour over the last few years, one of which is that when you stop using it, your face will age more rapidly. This is simply not the case.

If you stop using Botox, your face will simply return to its original appearance. It does prevent wrinkles from developing and getting worse, and it does slow dow n the aging process, but in order to maintain a youthful appearance, it is best to continue with the treatment, once you have started receiving it.

Rather than freezing the forehead and making a patient lose all facial expression, when administered properly by a professional and qualified cosmetic surgeon who will use best practices and will target the right muscles, it can help revitalise the face.

I spoke to Irish Tatler about how, as with any of the other cosmetic surgery procedures and treatments I offer at the Blackrock Clinic, the aim is not perfection, but to provide an improved, yet natural look, and as I mentioned in the article, 95% of my patients emphasise their desire to appear completely natural after a procedure. They discuss the lines on their face they don’t like, and almost always, this is not because they want to look polished and perfect, but because those lines project an emotion or expression they do not feel.

As we get older, our faces change, and the inevitable softening of our facial muscles and loss of elasticity that comes with age, can lead to our face appearing different from how we feel inside. Wrinkles develop and deepen as a result of age, gravity, everyday use of our facial muscles, and many other factors, and sometimes these wrinkles can emphasise a particular aspect of our face we are not entirely happy with. Showing the real you, the person inside, is what I aim to do, and Botox and fillers are a great way to do this.

I always emphasise the importance of understanding why a patient wants to undergo a treatment, whether it’s a surgical procedure such as a facelift or rhytidectomy, a neck lift, or eyelid (peri-orbital) surgery, or facial rejuvenation treatment such as Botox and fillers. It is just as important for the patient to understand all of the considerations regarding such treatments, which is why I bring each through a detailed consultation.

I also discussed how I am increasingly seeing younger people come to my clinic to enquire about facial rejuvenation treatments such as Botox and fillers. We now live in a culture that emphasises the importance of appearance more than ever before, and patients now come to me in their 20s or early 30s, looking for a proactive way to prevent the first signs of aging appearing, rather than as a reactive treatment for wrinkles or lines that have already started to appear.

For patients of any age, I find that the natural look is emphasised, with subtlety the key. It is vital that the cosmetic surgeon understands why the patient wants the treatment, and explains fully what outcome can, and should be, achieved, based on each patient’s unique face shape, as well as their lifestyle and other factors.

Because of this, I advise an approach to good facial care that can include promoting a healthy lifestyle, using good cosmetic products, fillers, laser and ultrasound therapy as well as Botox as part of a tailor-made plan specific to each patient. As I mention in the article, I advise all of my patients on how best to look after their skin with recommended products that cater for the skin’s needs throughout the day and night. Good skin lies at the heart of facial beauty, so looking after it in every way is important.

I was asked about fillers, and how they too can enhance the facial appearance by making the face look more refreshed, or to create enhanced facial harmony. I explained that I always use a non-permanent filler such as hyaluronic acid, which is extremely compatible with our skin, making the chance of rejection almost zero.

If a patient is not happy with the results of the filler treatment, I can safely and quickly administer a treatment to dissolve it within 24 to 48 hours, as opposed to semi-permanent filler that can last up to 12 months or even double that.

I strongly advise against the use of semi-permanent or silicone fillers in the article, as they can have serious consequences such as chronic inflammation and even facial deformity five or ten years later.

It was very enjoyable to discuss this very interesting subject with the team at Irish Tatler, and I am grateful they recognised my expertise in the area of cosmetic surgery, facial rejuvenation and the use of Botox and fillers. I’d like to thank all involved for consulting with me, and I hope the article is of great benefit to all who read it.
