One of the most important aspects of any cosmetic procedure is that the patient – and practitioner – understands what is possible. People tend to have a particular idea in mind when they decide to have a procedure done, but it can be difficult for them to fully get this idea across to their surgeon.
I spend a lot of time during consultations establishing what a patient is hoping to achieve and making sure we’re on the same page, as it were. It is also important to explain at this stage that no one will look ‘perfect’ after a procedure, and nor should they want to be. The aim and the best outcome is to look like a better version of yourself.
A good, skilled surgeon will look at the person in their entirety – for example, a nose job or rhinoplasty should work aesthetically with the rest of the face, while liposuction should enhance the entire silhouette, and not just remove lumps and bumps.
Thankfully, advances in technology are making this step much easier and giving patient and surgeon more clarity regarding what is possible. In the past we used computer programmes to demonstrate approximated ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots, but the 3D technology of the Crisalix device, allows a patient to see a very good approximation of how the procedure will turn out. It is particularly helpful for breast augmentation procedures.
Now I can show the patient a 3D scan of their body with the proposed breast augmentation or implants ‘in place’ but in an exciting move I can also show them an even better representation of expected results by using VR Goggles (Gear VR). The patient puts the goggles on, looks down and can actually see a 3D image of how the breasts will look on their body.
The benefits for the patient are that they can see clearly what the breast augmentation will look like and in turn can make a more informed decision. By having a consultation with the patient and going through the different levels of change or the different sizes, I can better gauge what size the patient is looking for.
The patient may have an idea in mind of what the results would be, but it is important that they also get a good visual understanding of what it will look like in application as well.
For instance, if the nipples are far apart, and you put in implants, the nipples will be further apart, and you can show the patient this with the 3D image.
For the cosmetic surgeon, it ensures the patient is given the implants they want, and reduces the risk of a patient coming back and saying that the implants were not what they wanted.
When it is all explained and shown to the patient before a procedure, it is valuable information they can understand and make an informed decision on.
I particularly like the fact that the Crisalix images can be emailed to the patient after the consultation. They don’t need to download any sort of programme or software – all they need is the link I send them.
They can then study the images at home, discuss the various options and changes with loved ones and be confident in their decision. And when the patient is happy with their procedure and the ensuing results, I am happy.
