The cosmetic surgery industry is always changing and innovating. As a plastic surgeon, it is always so interesting to watch new treatments and devices develop, to make our jobs easier and, more importantly, to provide better results for our patients.
It’s important to stay up-to-date with developments that quite often revolutionise the treatment we can offer, and of course it is equally important to be able to offer the highest standard of care.
There are always new treatments and innovations reported or demonstrated, but I take care not to immediately take on these without having enough clinical data or evidence to support their use, and most importantly, ensure patient safety. I also check the scientific medical literature ensuring these innovations are beneficial to the patient and cause no harm.
For my practice, I have been delighted to take on some new technologies and innovative treatments that meet these requirements and give great results for my patients. Here are just three developments I am particularly pleased about.
A threadlift is both cheaper and less invasive than a facelift. While it may not be suitable for everyone it is becoming increasingly popular and works to lift a sagging face, restoring firmness and defining contours. It is a temporary measure, lasting about 18 months, and that tends to suit my patients.
The thread is made from a dissolvable polylactic acid - I use a product called Silhouette Soft – which also helps to stimulate collagen in the skin. The threads are held in place by absorbable cones.
The treatment can be carried out under local anaesthetic; I simply numb three points on the face, and with a very fine needle, I insert the thread and pull it up to tighten the face. I can also manually reshape the tissue a little to give better results. It really is a very effective treatment for suitable patients.
One of the key aspects to any treatment is that both patient and practitioner are on the same page regarding results and what is possible. In the past, we relied on computer programmes to show patients an approximation of what they will look like after surgery. However new advances, such as Crisalix, have made this process so much clearer and easier
This innovative technology lets me capture a 3D image of a patient, their face and body, before any treatment occurs. We upload the scan and then I can show the patient what the results of a procedure will ‘look like’ on them. It is particularly good for breast augmentation and nose jobs (rhinoplasty). I can show a patient gradual changes in size and shape, and from different angles, until they are happy with the results.
It takes away much of the guesswork between patient and doctor – too often people have different ideas about what is being requested (for example, often people don’t really understand what a particular cup size is, or will look like on their body and how it will affect their overall body shape). Technology like Crisalix makes it clearer for all concerned.
It might be surprising to hear, but ear correction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures carried out in Ireland, and I have patients of all ages coming to see me to address the issue of protruding ears.
Previously, we had to do quite a complicated surgery to pin the ears back closer to the head. Now though, thanks to an ingenious product, up to 80% of patients may not require surgery to deal with this issue.
A simple invention called an earFold device, metal alloys used to pin back the ears, have revolutionised the treatment. A specially designed clip (PreFold) is attached to the outside of the ear during consultation to show what it will look like post-surgery.
Once the patient is happy with the look that can be achieved and the number of ear clips needed, their positioning, etc, the treatment itself simply involves the use of a numbing agent before I insert the clip internally, whereupon it works immediately. The results are truly impressive; the earFold is a real innovation.
If you are considering a cosmetic procedure, whether it is non-surgical facial rejuvenation, ear correction or a surgical procedure, we can advise on the best options for you. Contact us to arrange a consultation.
