If you are considering having any sort of cosmetic procedure, the first step should be to do a lot of research. Think about what part of our body you want to improve, and why, and look into the procedure you think you might want to undergo.
Whether it’s rhinoplasty (a nose job), abdominoplasty (a tummy tuck), a neck lift or chin augmentation, it is important to educate yourself on the procedure and process, and what is involved before, during and after the surgery. What sort of results can you expect? What’s the down time? Try to develop realistic expectations at this stage as it will help you later on.
More importantly, research potential surgeons. I cannot stress enough how important it is that you put yourself in the hands of someone experienced, properly trained and highly-skilled.
Recommendations are always good; if you know someone, a friend or a family member, who had a procedure done, they might be happy to give you the name of their surgeon. However, beyond recommendations and reputations, it is essential that the surgeon performing the treatment is properly accredited. They should have FRCSI(Plast) or FRCS(Plast) qualifications and be an accredited consultant plastic surgeon.
You can find a properly qualified surgeon via the Irish Association of Plastic Surgeons website http://www.plasticsurgery.ie. All the members of the association have been trained in plastic surgery to the highest level possible in Ireland and are on the Specialist Register in Plastic And Reconstructive Surgery of the Medical Council.
You should also check that the hospital or clinic is accredited too, preferably Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited, which is considered the gold standard in global health care.
Remember, you will want to be treated somewhere that offers a high level of aftercare, and somewhere that can deal swiftly and properly with any complications that might occur.
When you do select a surgeon, make sure you have a full consultation with them. They should be able answer all your questions, dispel any myths about cosmetic surgery, explain the medical
terms involved, and assure you of all aspects of the procedure. Find out how often they have performed the operation, the results they have seen with it, the potential complications that can occur and how they would deal with them. They should talk you through the whole procedure, pre- and post-care, as well as what will happen during the surgery.
You should be given what we call a cooling off period, to think about your decision. While the surgeon should listen to your reasons for wanting to undergo a cosmetic surgery procedure and should advise you accordingly on what they feel would best suit your needs, it is also important that you don’t feel bullied or pressured into undergoing any sort or procedure or feel that you are being steered towards other, perhaps more expensive, operations.
A good doctor/patient relationship is very important to achieve the best results and also to make the experience as uncomplicated as possible. In short, you should trust your surgeon, and feel completely comfortable with them. A good surgeon will go out of their way to ensure this is the case. If you have any doubts, don’t forget that you can always look elsewhere. Remember, the decision rests with you.
