Common Nose Complaints And How Rhinoplasty Can Help

September 8, 2017
Nose1

Situated as it is in the centre of the face, the nose has a very big impact on a person’s overall appearance. Unhappiness with the size or shape of the nose can lead to dissatisfaction, therefore, not only with it, but with the face in general, and any augmentation of the nose can result in a dramatic change to how a person looks.

Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed in Ireland, and throughout the world, as a result, because when reshaped in harmony with the rest of the face, it can make a dramatic improvement to a person’s appearance and self-confidence.

Successful rhinoplasty requires an in-depth medical appraisal and consultation with a qualified surgeon pre-surgery, at which the surgeon and patient will discuss the reasons behind wanting the procedure and the potential outcome. The surgeon will also explain to the patient how the reshaping of the nose may change other areas of the face, such as with upper lip projection, and will outline any other treatments that may be necessary to ensure facial harmony.

There are many reasons why people choose to have rhinoplasty done, from the medical – correcting a deviated septum, reshaping internal structures to improve breathing, correcting damage experienced in an accident, etc – to the aesthetic, and here are some of the main cosmetic ones.

A large or overly-rounded tip

Having a bulbous nose tip can make a person’s nose look bigger, or wider, than it actually is, but this can have a big impact on self-confidence in the appearance.

The shape of the lower lateral cartilage can be reshaped to create a softer and more ‘triangular’ appearance that can better suit the face as a whole.

Too big or too long

A nose that seems too big or too long in the context of the rest of the facial features can detract from the eyes, mouth, etc, and leave a person feeling very self-conscious about it.

This can require complex cosmetic surgery, during which the nasal tip is reduced and the nose is reshaped to appear shorter and smaller to give a more balanced profile that better suits the entire face.

Too pointy

Excess cartilage at the tip of the nose or projecting septum cartilage can lead to a pointed effect.

Reducing the amount of cartilage present at the nose tip with reshaping surgery and rounding it out to create a softer look can give great results that enhance the overall appearance with better facial balance.

Crooked or misshapen

There are many reasons why a person’s nose may be misshapen, from facial trauma to genetics, and this can cause the face to appear asymmetrical. Correcting this can be a complex procedure that is more invasive and requires more recovery time than other rhinoplasty procedures, and should only be performed by a surgeon with technical and aesthetic experience in rhinoplasty. It can require resetting the nasal bones through osteotomy – the cutting and reshaping of the bones of the nose – but it can result in a very positive outcome for the patient, with dramatic improvement to the nose shape and overall facial appearance.

Nose2

A bump or hump on the bridge

A hump on the bridge of the nose can draw the attention as it can be quite noticeable and detracts from the rest of the facial features.

Rhinoplasty can remove some or all of the hump, depending on a patient’s preference, but it is vital that they communicate clearly with the surgeon on this during the consultation period, so that both are agreed on the level of augmentation that is required and expected.

I use 3D imaging technology in my clinic to illustrate to patients the various gradations of change they can achieve through rhinoplasty, offering a full view of how the nose will look not only on its own, but in relation to the rest of the face, so that we can ensure balance and harmony.

While rhinoplasty can make a really big impact on the shape of the nose and the overall appearance of a patient’s face, it is also important to know that recovery times can be long, and it can take between a few months and a year to see the final result, when healing has finished and the nose has settled into its new shape.

I see a great deal of satisfaction among my rhinoplasty patients, however, with enhanced shaping of the nose giving them much-improved self-confidence and happiness with their overall look.
