Botox and Fillers: A Proactive Approach To a Youthful Appearance

It is undeniable that the aging process can be an unpleasant experience. Noticing fine lines or wrinkles, or indeed not-so-fine lines and wrinkles, for the first time can be quite a shock, and it is natural to want to maintain a youthful look for as long as possible.

There are two types of wrinkle. First, dynamic wrinkles, which occur simply because of muscles moving in the face, forming expressions over years and years, and second, static wrinkles caused by gravity and the loss of collagen and elasticity skin experiences as we age. Lines may appear as early as in the late 20s and continue to worsen over the subsequent years as part of the aging process.

While nature and genetics will impact on how you age, there are many steps you can take, particularly from an early age, to help minimise the effect on your face.

Smoking causes the skin to age, so it is important not just for overall health, but for the vitality of the skin, to not do so. Being sun smart is also essential – using an SPF daily to help protect skin from the damaging impact of UV rays. Given that up to 90% of what we perceive to be the signs of aging – lines, wrinkles, etc - are a result of sun damage, it’s clear that protecting skin from an early age can have a huge impact. Of course, proper protection from UV rays also helps to reduce the risk of skin cancer, so this really is a vital step in anyone’s daily regime.

Beyond lifestyle factors, there are many cosmetic procedures you can opt to undergo to enhance your appearance and make you look as young and fresh as you feel. These can include peri- orbital or eyelid surgery, a facelift or rhytidectomy, or a neck lift, for example.

But many people also look to non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments such as Botox and fillers. They may have had a dubious reputation in the past, due to over or incorrect use, most noticeable in celebrities who refuse to age gracefully, or naturally, but when administered by an experienced professional, and used in the correct manner, both can have a very positive impact.

Increasingly, I find younger patients coming into my clinic to enquire about using Botox and fillers as a preventative measure to combat or reduce the effect of lines and wrinkles, rather than as a treatment for wrinkles that have already started to appear. It can be very effective when used in this manner, as it can slow the process of lines forming in the first place, meaning they deepen less over the years.

Botox

Botox is a brand of botulinum toxin (there are a number of brands and strengths available). It is injected into the muscles to temporarily reduce their activity, which in turn softens lines and wrinkles. The effects last for four to six months. It can be very effective on established lines and wrinkles, but when administered correctly, the treatment can be used as a preventative or proactive way of helping to reduce lines in the future.

Similarly, fillers can have a dramatic, rejuvenating effect on the face. Loss of volume is a major factor in an aged appearance. Fillers can be used to restore this volume to sagging areas, or to reshape and even recontour the face.

Hyaluronic acid is particularly effective and is a widely used soft tissue filler that has shown great results. There are a number of brands available, including Restalyne and Juvederm. Some fillers are more suitable for a deeper injection while others are better for superficial injections just underneath the skin.

Using fillers can also be a pre-emptive way of avoiding the need for a rhytidectomy, or facelift, and when administered by an experienced professional, can restore volume and give skin a revived, youthful appearance.

What’s important to remember is that you don’t need to wait for wrinkles or other signs of aging to appear before deciding to do something about it. You can be proactive, and choose to have Botox or filler treatment while your face shows all the vitality of youth, to slow the aging process from taking effect and helping you to stay fresh and young looking for much longer.
