After a consultation with Dr Steve Karagiannis from www.skincheck.ie when it was discovered he had a suspected melanoma on his arm, Mr Tony Randles was referred to Mr Chan, the consultant plastic surgeon who specialises in skin cancer excision and reconstructive surgery at Blackrock Clinic.

He had the affected skin removed for diagnosis purpose under local anaesthetic and it was confirmed as a melanoma in situ, a type of skin cancer, which is the earliest stage of melanoma in which cancer cells in the top layer of skin (the epidermis) are still contained in the area in which they started to develop. Though they have not yet started to spread or grow into deeper layers of the skin, or become invasive, it is vital that diagnosis is swift and action taken quickly.

Mr Chan also did a follow up operation. This was to ensure sufficient margin and that the melanoma was fully removed. As the mole turned out to be a melanoma in situ, it was very important it was removed straight away and Tony was impressed by Mr Chan's professionalism and efficiency in this regard.

Tony says he found Mr Chan to be very reassuring and at each stage of the process during his treatment, Mr Chan provided clear information and advised Tony on the best course of action to take. As well as the melanoma, Tony had some moles removed that turned out to be benign.

"I understood the associated risk and was happy to take Mr Chan's recommendations," he explains. "He also fitted in with my schedule and allowed me to go on holidays and live my normal day to day life."

He was very happy with Mr Chan, the advice he was given about skin cancer, and the treatment he received, saying: "Mr Chan's treatment was excellent and I was very pleased. His work was very neat and he makes sure to follow up at each stage in terms of removal of sutures and doing final checks."

Tony's particular situation required speedy work and Mr Chan worked quickly to remove the melanoma. "His manner was friendly yet professional," Tony says, "He is genuinely interested in the best outcome for his patient."
