Sometimes you can be unhappy with your appearance, but don’t specifically know why. You may feel that you look tired, or even older than your years, but it is hard to pinpoint exactly what the issue is - you just know you don’t look or feel as much like yourself as you used to. Having a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon can bring a sense of clarity, revealing not only what your concerns actually are, but also the best options for tackling them and restoring the youthful vitality you previously had.

Any journey into the world of aesthetic enhancement or cosmetic surgery should begin with a comprehensive consultation with your practitioner. This is your chance to outline what has been troubling you about your appearance, whether it’s a long-standing concern or more the effects of getting older. The cosmetic plastic surgeon will be able to recommend options for you and together you can decide on a programme of treatments.

However, sometimes it’s good to have a little info to hand, before you begin this process, so here I have outlined some of the more common issues I encounter and some of the most popular treatments for them.

What to do when…

Those lines start to make you look older

Our facial muscles move thousands of times a day, so it is no surprise that, over time, lines and wrinkles, often referred to as expression lines, become more visible. They can be particularly prominent in areas such as the forehead, around the eyes (here they’re often called laughter lines or crows’ feet) and around the mouth - from the nose to the outer corners of the mouth (the naso-labial lines) and from the outer corners of the mouth down the chin (marionette lines).

Non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments can be a great help with such issues. Botox is a temporary, non-surgical treatment that can soften deep expression lines, with results lasting from three to six months, while hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers can be used to fill in deep lines or to restore volume to areas that may be losing definition, thus giving a more youthful appearance.

Your skin needs a boost

As we age, the effects of daily exposure to pollutants, UV rays from the sun and intrinsic or chronological ageing (which happens naturally in the body) takes a toll on skin. Skin that was once radiant and had a healthy plumpness can become duller with the passing of time. An evenness of tone is one of the benchmarks of beautiful skin, but sun exposure over time can lead to sunspots and pigmentation marks, which impact on the skin’s overall appearance.

A cosmetic peel can be an effective treatment to gently slough off the upper layers of dulling, dead skin cells to expose healthier, younger cells beneath. This can restore that brightness and even tone to skin, and can make a person look years younger.

Your jawline is softening

Good definition and facial contour is another benchmark of beauty, but with age, weight increase, and the simple, cumulative effect of gravity over time, what was once a nicely defined jaw and chin area can become softer and less sculpted.

The face loses some of its internal structure (collagen) as we get older, which can have an impact on the jawline as everything ‘heads south’.

In the past, a neck lift or facelift were the main options to address this concern but now a much more straightforward, non-invasive procedure has become popular: the threadlift.

A temporary treatment, it involves the insertion of special dissolvable threads into key areas of the face. These threads are then pulled up, with the result that the whole face ‘lifts’, restoring definition and highlighting contours once again. Results can last for up to 18 months and it’s also worth noting that the treatment can be repeated in the future.

All of these cosmetic treatments can have a very positive effect on a patient’s appearance and can restore a youthful look or simple enhance the complexion to give back self-confidence. It is important to discuss your options with your cosmetic surgeon before making any decisions, and to ensure best results.

If you are considering Botox, dermal fillers, a cosmetic peel or a threadlift, or any other cosmetic treatment, I can advise on the best options for you. Contact us to arrange a consultation.
