Cosmetic Surgery: What You Need To Know And Do Before Deciding On A Procedure

March 24, 2017
What To Know And Do

Irish people are increasingly turning to cosmetic surgery and aesthetic procedures to improve or enhance their appearance. From correcting a long-troubling woe like protruding ears with earFold correction, or a misshapen nose with rhinoplasty, to treating the signs of ageing with a facelift, necklift, a brow lift or cosmetic fillers, procedures are becoming much more accessible and indeed acceptable. If you are considering having ‘something done’, there are some important aspects you should keep in mind to help ensure a good outcome.

Do your research

The first step is to do lots of research on your particular concern or the procedure you’re considering undergoing. Look for reliable sources online – the Irish Association of Plastic Surgeons’ website, PlasticSurgery.ie is a good resource, and has a lot of information on various procedures. First-hand accounts can also be helpful, so if you know anyone who has undergone the procedure you’re looking at, see if they would be happy to tell you about their experience.

Choosing your surgeon

This is probably the most important step of any cosmetic procedure; it is vital that you select a surgeon who is not only properly trained and adequately experienced, but is someone you can have a good relationship with. Again, if you know someone who has had a procedure done, a first-person recommendation is a good starting point, and it is worth visiting WhatClinic.ie to read testimonials from past patients.

I put a large emphasis on making all of my patients feel relaxed, comfortable and in control of the decisions they make, backed up by the information and advice I can give. As such, I am delighted to have recently been awarded the WhatClinic Patient Service Award, recognising the satisfaction my clients receive at my clinic.

Any good practitioner will offer a consultation service. Use this time to learn about their level of experience – particularly in relation to the particular procedure you are looking to get done. For example, how often have they performed the surgery? What sort of results have they achieved?

What processes are in place if things don’t go to plan? What sort of post-care can you avail of? If you are happy with what you find out, you will know you have the right surgeon for you.

Check their credentials

You should absolutely make sure that the surgeon performing the treatment is properly accredited. They should have FRCSI(Plast) or FRCS(Plast) qualifications and also be an accredited consultant plastic surgeon. You will be able to access a list of qualified surgeons on the Irish Association of Plastic Surgeons website, as mentioned above.

Members of the association have all been trained in plastic surgery to the very highest standard and they are all on the Specialist Register in Plastic And Reconstructive Surgery of the Medical Council.

I would also recommend that you make sure the hospital is accredited, preferably Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited as this is the gold standard for health care across the world. Having reliable aftercare is very important – you want to undergo treatment in a facility that can properly and quickly deal with any complications that might occur.

Make sure you know what’s involved

When you leave that first, or subsequent, consultations with a surgeon you should feel comfortable and confident that you know what’s ahead, what the procedure or treatment involves, as well as the possible side effects and complications and what sort of downtime and after care is involved. The practitioner should also offer a ‘cooling off period’, to allow you to go away and think about your decision and perhaps discuss the decision with your loved ones.

Cost

Finally, cost is also of course a consideration for many people. Most procedures aren’t covered by private health insurance so it’s important to be aware of all costs involved. Remember the ‘best deal’ may not be the best at all as cheap offers may end up costing a lot more in the long run, or leave you with unsatisfactory results, and you may not get the aftercare you need.

Investing in a good surgeon and a professional practice is one of the best investments you can make.
